The M.A. program Tanzvermittlung im zeitgenössischen Kontext (Dance Dissemination in contemporary contexts ) aims at dance artists, teachers and choreographers, who wish to research, reflect upon and further develop formats of transferring knowledge within the context of contemporary dance, theoretically and practice based, within individual and collective research projects.

The program aims at enabling its students to develop reflected, differentiated and critical views and approaches upon and toward a perpetually changing field of contemporary dance. Students develop tools and methods relevant to their own context and future professional practice.

Students apply these methods to practice. The know-how acquired empowers the students to act as specialists for movement research, training and education in diverse professional fields. Students will be qualified to represent their work subject-specific and self-motivated in diverse formats of presentation

The embedding of the program in the Centre for Contemporary Dance, alongside the B.A. Dance and the M.A. Dance Studies, ensures an interlocking of practical and theoretical contents and formats. It is required that students conceptualize and realize individual and collective research projects that may overlap the study courses and take place in cooperation with various institutions and theatres within a broad spectrum of dance in North-Rhine-Westphalia.

The M.A. program Dance Dissemination a full-time study program. Usually the students are required to be present ten hours per week. Courses are offered in blocks in order to allow for individual professional practice.

German and English language proficiency are required.

The course contains 6 obligatory and 2 optional modules

1. Module Corporeal Practice

Students take part in diverse formats of training within contemporary dance including different dance techniques, somatic practices and formats of partner work, improvisatory and choreographic methods. Students reflect named practices, analyse inherent body images, possible content related and conceptual interfaces and investigate feasible hybrid potential. Additionally, approaches and principles found in the field of somatic practices are being explored according to their applicability and relevance to training, improvisation, choreography and performanc

2. Module Interlaced Methodical/Didactical Research

This module highlights specific as much as fundamental methodical-didactical problematics and explores terminologies such as knowledge, practice, perception, imagination and intuition and reflects upon these terms theoretically and practically. Including methods found in the field of communication studies and system theory, students examine methodical-didactical problematics, concepts, content and formats and evaluate these by means of diverse media and draw up own writings.

3. Module Independent Research

Students work throughout their entire studies individually and collectively in independent, supervised research projects that address their individual area of interest and questions within the context of their disseminative practice. The embedding of the MA program in the Centre for Contemporary Dance, including the B.A. Dance and the M.A. Dance Science study program, allows, in the advanced stages of the studies, to focus on an intensive comprehensive body of research. Additionally, focus lies on a practically relevant integration into diverse fields of dissemination outside of the structures of the Centre for Contemporary Dance.

4. Module Artistic Research & Choreographic Practice

In this module, students study compositional, choreographic and dramaturgical methods. Students develop their own choreographic as well as performative working methods and reflect upon their methods, artistic approaches and ideas. Besides artistic, dramaturgical and disseminative skills, organisational as well as leadership competencies shall be developed. Furthermore, students develop methods of individual and collective feedback. They create their own artistic work, taking disseminative practice into account, document their rehearsal process and finally evaluate their projects. Mentors are supervising projects

5. Module Research and Dissemination

This Module offers students the possibility to practically apply individual questions regarding artistic and disseminative practice in depth, as a preparation for their master theses throughout a period of several weeks within a freely chosen frame and context. Projects are being supervised through mentoring, colloquia and evaluations.

6. Module Examination

Optional Module Dance Context School

The two-semester module is being offered in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne.  Participants choosing this module are students of the MA courses Tanzvermittlung im zeitgenössischen Kontext, V.I.E.W (German Sport University) and a group of external practitioners who are already involved in dance projects in schools, providing further opportunity for comprehensive collaboration and networking. The module aims to concentrate and transfer contextual knowledge of the “systems“ dance and schools as an important base for a successful outcome of teaching and cooperation as much as to expand expertise in the areas of choreography, concept development, project management, networking, communication and reflection in schools offering general education

Optional Module Transcultural Practice in Public Space

This module focuses on dealing with intercultural and as a consequence thereof transcultural approaches as points of departure for the realisation of artistic works in public space. Students explore political, social and aesthetic fields of tension inherent in concrete locations within public space. They develop theoretical, communicative, organisational and artistic capabilities enabling them to conceptualize projects, dialogically and within a team that account for the specific requirements met when dealing with ’’own’’ and ’’other’’ culture within the context of globalised cultural areas.
