In 1961 a dance program was inaugurated at the Rheinische Musikschule Cologne. Starting from the premise that dance represents an academic discipline which should be taught at university level, the dance program was transferred to the University of Music Cologne.
2009, due to implementation of BA programs and the passing of a new Art College Act, the constitution of the University of Music Cologne was restructured and consequently, the dance program was redesigned.
In order to give dance more significance an independent institute was created: the Centre for Contemporary Dance.
Dance became a more integral part of the university, which is now called University for Music and Dance Cologne.
The Centre for Contemporary Dance is situated in Köln-Nippes, a central, urban and lively district of Cologne.
CCD is equipped with generous facilities: seven studios, a Pilates studio, a studio theatre fitted with 150 seats, several seminar rooms, a reference library and an online media room available to students. The positions of professors and lecturers are being held by internationally acclaimed professional artists.
Cologne is a buoyant, international and multi-cultural city, its University for Music and Dance Cologne ranks among the most renown European art colleges, its artistic reputation is recognized internationally.
